With the rapid development of oil industry, the pollution problems caused by drilling waste have attached more and more attention around the world. The whole process of oil industry (exploration, drilling, development, storage and processing) will produce a variety of pollutants (oil, oilfield waste water, waste drilling fluids and cuttings) in the corresponding conditions. If these drilling waste are not directly discharged, it is bound to cause some damages to the natural environment.

In recent years, accounting from urgent need and exploration demand for energy worldwide, various types of drilling fluids are applied in drilling process and additives and toxic ingredients are increasingly added in drilling fluids. More serious environmental protection requirements from the worldwide standard, harmless governance of waste drilling fluids has become an urgent problem to resolve.

The main reasons for the pollution caused by waste drilling fluid are explained as the following several aspects:

1/ After completion of drilling with drilling , due to drilling waste changes in physical and chemical properties and it can not be recycled and discarded, its annual emissions are also growing with the rapid development of China's oil industry which is becoming an important cause of environmental pollution the reason.

2/ Many domestic oil fields, especially these old oilfield drilling located in the paddy fields, wheat fields, ponds , and nearby residential areas, will porduce more serious impact on the environment and mankind more directly and obviously .

For example,oil and gas field in northern Shaanxi in the past, due to the pursuit of production and economic benefits and the neglect of environmental protection , waste drilling fluid has caused a great deal of environmental pollution. However, more and more attention in recent years has been attached by the state environmental protection,at the same time,northern Shaanxi oil also have to abandon oil and gas wells drilling processing accordingly.
